This classic old clone has made a rich, classic sort of Pinot Noir. It just feels nice and silky and dry on the palate, with rewarding flavors of cherries, mocha, Tabasco, cloves and pepper, and a touch of stimulating bitterness on the finish. Should develop for a few years.——S.H.(12/1/2008)—— 90

Pommard is one of the old, pre-Dijon clones in California, and here, it yields a slightly rustic wine, with wild berry, pepper, rhubarb, coffee and earthy flavors, edged with new oak. It’s dry and young now, but the fruity core is dramatically rich in cherries, and the acid-tannin balance is perfect. All it needs is two to five years to come around.——S.H.(4/1/2007)—— 91

Firm, rich and concentrated, with earthy wild berry and blackberry and hints of hazelnut from oak. Tannins show their strength on the long finish. Well-balanced. Drink now through 2010. 151 cases made. -JL

Compared to Foley’s unbelievable Dijon Clone bottling, this one’s more tannic and less immediately flashy. It’s a dry, full-bodied wine with an elegantly silky texture, but the cherry flavors are a little locked down, although the wine softens and sweetens with airing.
