The 2017 PreVail West Face is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 34% Syrah. Opaque ruby-purple, it offers lush aromas of crème de cassis, blackberry jam, vanilla bean, cedar and red cherry sparks. The full-bodied palate is dense and rich with fruity support for the new oak flavors, a pleasant touch of chew and just enough freshness, finishing long. A big and bold but straightforward and easy-drinking style if that's your thing. 502 cases produced.

The 2016 PreVail West Face is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 34% Syrah. Medium to deep ruby-purple, the nose is scented of blackcurrants, blackcurrant bud, cedar, vanilla bean, leather, dried herbs and baked blackberries with a touch of pencil shavings. It’s full-bodied, rich and dense, with gobs of ripe fruits and oak spices. It has a chalky frame and just enough freshness on the oaky finish.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, the 2015 PreVail West Face is medium to deep garnet-purple in color with a nose of crushed blackcurrants, black berry pie and blueberry compote with hints of cedar chest, wild thyme, lavender and wood smoke plus a waft of spice box. The palate is medium to full-bodied with lovely purity and an approachable frame of ripe, grainy tannins supporting the intense fruit, finishing long and savory. 735 cases produced.

The 2014 PreVail West Face has a deep garnet color and nose of cigar box, sandalwood, dried herbs and pencil shavings over a core of blackberries and black plums, plus a hint of yeast extract. Full-bodied and sporting a very good concentration of muscular black fruit, it has well-played chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with earthy persistence.

The 2013 PreVail West Face Proprietary Red is an intriguing blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 34% Syrah. I remember first tasting this when French wine consultant Philippe Melka was brought in to get the project off the ground. Nice notes of volcanic soil, blackberry and cassis with a striking minerality and a touch of barbecue smoke are all present in this dense purple-colored wine. The blend of Syrah and Cabernet works well in a lot of places, not just Australia, and certainly Ferrari-Carano has proven that with this cuvée. The tannins are relatively soft, and the wine cuts a full-bodied, broad, savory mouthfeel in the finish, which is long. This is super stuff. While drinkable now, it should continue to offer gorgeous consumption for 15 or more years.
