The 2005 Falset Old Vines is composed of 85% Garnacha and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in French oak, 50% new. Purple colored, it emits a superb aromatic array of slate/mineral, dried herbs, spice box, pencil lead, and black cherry. Full-bodied and layered on the palate, it has vibrant acidity and well integrated oak. Rich, succulent, and pleasure-bent, it can be enjoyed now but will improve in the bottle over the next several years. It is an exceptional value. Agricola Falset Marca was founded in 1919 and today owns 581 acres. Their Garnacha and Carinena holdings are over 100 years of age. The winemaker is the talented Jordi Alonso. The 2003 Falset Old-Vines is composed of 85% Garnacha and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 12 months in 50% new French oak. Purple-colored, it offers an attractive perfume of scorched earth, toast, spice box, and kirsch liqueur. Mouth-filling, with very good concentration and moderate tannin, the wine is a bit compact in its finish, likely due to the extreme heat of the vintage.
