The 2016 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru La Riotte has an expressive and engaging bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, pressed flowers and bergamot tea, complex and gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very well-judged acidity, maybe a little conservative but very precise with a sense of energy and tension conveyed on the finish. Fortunately there is a good volume of this wine this vintage—try to buy some.

The 2015 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Riotte opens in the glass with a pretty nose of sweet cherry, warm spice and strawberry. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a chalky chassis of tannin, bright acids and a firm, grippy finish.

The 2013 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru la Riotte has a reticent nose at first, gradually unfurling in the glass, quite refined with floral notes accompanying the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and quite intense with tart red cherry fruit mixed with raspberry and cranberry flavors, leading to a harmonious, textured finish. This is an impressive la Riotte that should drink well over the next 12-15 years.

The 2012 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Les Riottes is a little introverted on the nose after bottling, but the palate certainly reaffirms the potential that it showed in barrel with superb structure and a bold finish that fans out across the mouth. The 2011 Morey St. Denis 1er Cru La Riotte, which comes from a 0.56-hectare parcel, sports a pretty, feminine bouquet with light red cherry, fresh strawberry and dried rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and very good focus. No, there is not the length of a more benevolent season, but there is great poise and tension allied with a directness that would make it a superb match at the dinner table. Drink now-2017. Taupenot-Merme was my final visit of the week. I have been following these wines for a number of years, even predating my wine writing career. Winemaker Romain Taupenot and his sister Virginie run the domaine in the centre of Morey-Saint-Denis and fashion a classical style of Burgundy wine that I feel has improved in recent years.
