Far better is the 2007 Syrah from the Vogelzang Vineyard in Santa Ynez. This wine, with its straightforward blackberry fruit intermixed with some loamy soil notes and a hint of spring flowers, has a juicy, plump meatiness to it. It should drink well for 2-3 years. This is another winery well-known for its values. I liked last year’s 2006s slightly more than their 2007s, but these still represent fair value to the consumer. Tel. (805) 686-8999

Nearly outstanding, the medium to full-bodied 2004 Syrah Vogelzang Vineyard exhibits a dense bouquet of blackberries, cassis, licorice, and earth. The finest wine in this portfolio, it is pure, layered, and impressive. This terrific value may merit a 90-point rating with another year of bottle age.
