With 3,384 bottles released, the Còlpetrone 2013 Montefalco Sagrantino has spent plenty of time already in steel, oak and glass and is ready to burst out of the gate. It displays a beautiful color in the glass with a combination of dark ruby and shiny garnet stone. That distinctive color is one of the most beautiful attributes of the Sagrantino grape. Dark cherry and crème de cassis segue to some baker's spice and nutmeg. You feel the tannins here, especially as the wine impacts the palate, but it's nothing that a grilled steak and creamy potatoes can't handle.

A savory, full-bodied version, in the traditional style, with tobacco, leather and earth notes leading to more subtle dried cherry and spice accents that swathe the dense and chewy tannins. The 2011 Montefalco Sagrantino is a hearty and well-built wine that opens to a dark and richly extracted appearance. The wine sports a thick garnet color with red ruby highlights. The bouquet offers candied cherry, exotic spice and cured-leather aromas. The wine's tannic structure is significant, and you should expect as much from this singular indigenous grape from central Italy. This was a warm vintage that shows ripe and evolved fruit today. Some 130,000 bottles were produced.

A savory red, with smoke and cured tobacco notes wafting through the black olive, ground anise and dried cherry flavors. Full-bodied and balanced. A fresh, minerally edge accents the grippy finish.
