This elegant red combines cherry and currant flavors with iron, tobacco, bitter almond and earth notes all fused to a firm, dry structure. Finds a nice equilibrium in the end. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Nastagio is released six years after the harvest as if it were a riserva. Another difference between this wine and Col d'Orcia's annata expression is that Nastagio is aged in French 5-hectoliter tonneaux instead of larger oak casks (as large as 75 hectoliters). The smaller oak vessels mean that this wine is more robust and textured overall. Don't forget that the 2013 vintage is naturally endowed with more power, structure and aromatic intensity to begin with. This wine is packed tight with blackberry and dark cassis aromas followed by spice, tobacco and toast. Some 10,000 bottles were made.

Although this wine is not labeled Riserva, it is released six years after the harvest as if it were. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Nastagio shows more robust and evident power. It also offers a rich and dense textural presentation that should serve the wine nicely as it evolves over the next 10 years or more in your cellar. Dark cherry and wild blackberry segue spice, leather, cola and licorice.
