Perricone is one of the most interesting indigenous grapes to emerge from Sicily. The 2014 Sachia is a slightly overdone wine that does not give much room for the varietal characteristics. The wine opens to thick aromas of black cherry, dried blueberry and spice. I noted a slightly oxidative aroma that recalled dried apple skins. The wine is heavy and fat in the mouth. This is an easy drinking red, but ultimately it does not offer the nuances of the grape.

The 2008 Sachia (Perricone) is an intensely floral, vinous red with a gorgeous core of vibrant fruit, roses and sweet herbs that follows through to a long, refreshing finish. This is a decidedly elegant, feminine Sicilian red. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013. Caruso & Minini is a solid producer, but often simpler is better. Importer: Vinifera Imports, Ronkonkoma, NY; tel.
