Another wine for readers who suffer from clogged arteries is the massive, super-tannic, phenomenally concentrated 2009 Petite Sirah Palisades Vineyard. Made from Napa Valley fruit and tipping the scales at 16% alcohol, this wine possesses a boatload of glycerin and concentration. It is a 30-40-year wine given the glacial pace at which Petite Sirah evolves. A dense purple color is accompanied by scents of graphite, blueberry liqueur and ink as well as hints of oak and crushed rocks. The wine is so concentrated, full-bodied and intense that it is nearly painful to taste. In spite of the stratospheric level of the tannins, they are remarkably sweet and well-integrated. Forget this one for 4-5 years and drink it over the following 3-4 decades. It is amazing to think that fifteen years ago no one had ever heard of Carlisle Winery and Vineyards or Mike Officer. Following is a look at the 2008s from bottle as well as a preview of the charming, seductive 2009s. Mike Officer says 2009 is a strong year for his wines, but since he has done nearly everything right, it is hard for me to say his 2009s are better than previous vintages. Certainly he will not have much production in 2010 given all the issues Zinfandel vineyards had in that year. Carlisle’s Petite Sirahs are treated like this powerful, but under-appreciated varietal should be.
