The 2010 Vin Gris of Pinot Noir, a saignee of Pinot Noir, is a gorgeous, striking wine loaded with class and personality. Varietal fruit comes through loud and clear in this beautiful, broad shouldered rose. The wine was aged in stainless steel and did not undergo malolactic fermentation. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2013. I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted from Josh Jensen and Calera. Vintage 2008 was not an easy one, as a severe spring frost reduced yields to less than one ton per acre. Most of the Pinots are made with 100% whole clusters. I am not sure each of these sites is ideally suited to such a high percentage of stem inclusion, especially in this vintage, but time will tell. Calera has what are easily the most informative back labels I have ever seen, with much more information and detail on each wine than I can reproduce here. Kudos to Josh Jensen for providing his customers with the maximum level of detail one could ever ask for. If you love strawberry, sweet cherry, rhubarb, and chalky notes, check out Calera’s full-throttle, amazingly fresh yet intense, dark salmon-colored 2009 Vin Gris Pinot Noir. Two of my favorite roses of the season come from the Central Coast ... this one from Calera and the Tablas Creek 2009 Rose. The vivid aromatics are followed by a well-endowed rose that is almost a shock to one’s sensitivities given the number of vapid roses in the marketplace. Drink this beauty over the next 1-2 years. This may be the strongest group of wines Calera has produced in many years. From their less expensive whites through the generic and single vineyard Pinot Noirs, this remarkable portfolio showcases this idiosyncratic terroir isolated on Mt. Harlan. Although this is a rose, it provides an early glimpse, and a promising one, into the highly anticipated ’09 Pinot vintage. Ripe and fruity in cherries, vanilla and spices, the wine shows great finesse and style. ——S.H.(7/1/2010)—— 87
