The 2013 Pinot Noir de Villiers is gorgeous. Coming from an east-facing parcel of vines planted in 1997 and aged 19 months in 30% new French oak, it has a terrific core of black cherries, flowers, menthol, toasted spice and licorice that opens up beautifully with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, layered, supple and sexy, yet with plenty of elegance, ripe tannin and a big mid-palate, it can be drunk today with plenty of pleasure or cellared for a decade.

I loved the 2012 Pinot Noir de Villiers. It's a beautifully complete, balanced and satisfying Pinot Noir that does everything right. Giving up tons of sweet black raspberry and strawberry fruits, spice-box, dried flowers and potpourri characteristics, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless, with a ripe, supple texture that keeps you coming back to the glass. While there's more than enough fruit to keep this enjoyable now, there's some solid tannin and depth in there as well, so it will age.

First up and seriously perfumed, the 2011 Pinot Noir de Villiers is a gorgeous wine that excels both for its complexity and for its richness and breath on the palate. Giving up notes of ripe cherries, wild strawberries, exotic flowers, citron and spice, it has medium to full-bodied richness, a core of sweet fruit and a rich, seamless texture. In fact, it has a rare level of depth and texture in the vintage, and while beautiful today, I imagine it will evolve gracefully. These latest releases from Calera are rock-solid across the board, and looking at the 2011 Pinot Noirs specifically, they show the best of the cooler vintage and are gorgeous wines. Starting with the two Chardonnays, these are both outstanding whites that represent serious value. A deep, masculine effort that spent 16 months in 30% new French oak, the 2010 Pinot Noir de Villiers Vineyard dishes out serious amounts of earthy black fruits, wild strawberries, sappy underbrush and floral qualities on the nose. This is followed up by a medium to full-bodied, supple and gorgeously textured effort that has no hard edges and blockbuster length. It has a core of sweet fruit and is certainly enjoyable now, yet it should age effortlessly for 10-12. Drink now-2016. Open, voluptuous and sexy efforts, these all benefitted from substantial air time and gained richness and depth over the evening. They’re brilliant Pinot Noirs. www.calerawine.com

The 2009 Pinot Noir De Villiers Vineyard, from vines planted in 1997, bursts from the glass with expressive, juicy fruit. Dark red berries, flowers, mint, spices and an orange rind follow, leading to a generous, inviting finish. The De Villiers is the only vineyard-designate Pinot made from fully de-stemmed fruit. It is a towering wine of incomparable class and elegance. Simply put, this is a stunning showing from Calera. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. Readers who want to experience the finest Pinot Noirs being made in California should put Calera at or near the top of their lists. The 2009s are simply breathtaking in their beauty. I am not sure why I was so blown away by the estate’s 2009s, as the entry-level 2009 Central Coast Pinot I reviewed last year provided more than enough clues as to the quality of the rest of the lineup. Based on that wine, I should have known what to expect. Congratulations to proprietor Josh Jensen and his entire team on these magnificent, utterly compelling wines.
