The 2009 Altos Las Pizarras del Jalon is also sourced from 70- to 100-year-old Grenache vines but in this case the wine spent 10 months in 40% new French 500-liter barrels. Smoky barrel notes along with cinnamon, clove, lavender, mineral, and black cherry aromas lead to a modestly structured red that will benefit from 1-2 years of additional cellaring. In the glass it displays excellent depth, concentration, and length. It offers a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2021. Purple colored, the oak regimen adds aromatic complexity with aromas of smoke, mineral, tobacco, leather, lavender, and black cherry. The unoaked 2008 Las Pizarras del Jalon is 100% old-vine Garnacha sourced from vines ranging in age from 70-100 years. Purple-colored, it gives up a nose of earth, mineral, Asian spices, lavender and black cherry that jumps from the glass. With excellent depth and grip, gobs of fruit, and impeccable balance, it will continue to evolve for 1-2 years and offer prime drinking from 2011 to 2016. The purple-colored 2007 Alto Las Pizarras raises the bar considerably. It was fermented and aged in a mix of new and used French demi-muids. It offers up a superior perfume of toasty oak, mineral, violets, incense, and black cherry. On the palate it has layers of fruit, savory flavors, excellent balance, and enough structure to evolve for 3-4 years. It will be at its best from 2012 to 2022.
