The 2009 Koden is a pure Tempranillo that uses modern techniques (micro-oxygenation, new oak, etc.) on a young entry-level wine. To be frank, it renders the nose rather devoid of character. The palate is balanced but very chewy and dry on the forgettable finish. Drink now. Bodegas Luis Alegre is based in the sub-region of Rioja Alavesa. The 2008 Koden is a 100% Tempranillo cuvee aged in American oak barriques for 6 months. Cedar, black cherries, tobacco, and spice notes lead to a round, easygoing, smooth-textured red that will provide enjoyment over the next 3-4 years. It is a good value. Despite the fact that it was founded in 1968, Bodegas Luis Alegre is making its debut in this journal. Two white wines were presented for tasting.
