Ballentine is better known for well-crafted Bordeaux reds and Zinfandel, but they also bring that claret-like sensibility to Syrah. This single-vineyard ’04 from St. Helena is lush and soft and likeable. It shows deep flavors of blackberries, cassis, rose petals and violets, sweetened and complexed with toasty oak. Unanimously admired by our panel, Ballentine’s Syrah boasts a big mouthful of cocoa, plum and black cherry flavors, backed by firm acids and tannins. Has some faint rubbery notes, but they should fade with time or a brisk decanting. ——W.E.(9/1/2005)—— 88

A mix of earthy, leathery flavors woven together with funky currant and blackberry fruit. Needs time to soften the rather rustic, earthy tannins. Best from 2004 through 2009. 750 cases made. -JL

Very smooth and velvety texture. The tongue feels good as the dark stone fruit and peppery flavors spread over the palate like a soft blanket. The robust flavors are balanced by fine, dusty, dry tannins, further enhancing the mouthfeel. This is a very nice red wine of elegance and style. ——S.H.(12/1/2002)—— 91
