Babcock has been garnering considerable praise. Unfortunately, the winery chose not to show me their 1991 Estate Pinot Noir or 1991 Pinot Noir from the superb Sanford and Benedict Vineyard. I have reviewed Babcock's excellent Sauvignon Blanc from Eleven Oaks in the past, and the 1991 is a classy, white Graves style of Sauvignon/Semillon, with lavish quantities of new oak (nearly too much), and beautifully rich, unctuous, melony, fig fruit. When tasted in late spring, 1993, the fruit was holding up to the abundant wood. I may be in the minority, but I felt Rancho Sisquoc's 1991 Sauvignon Blanc and Gainey's 1991 Sauvignon Blanc-Limited Selection were better wines because the new oak was more integrated with the wine's fruit. Nevertheless, Babcock's distinctive wines are worth checking out. Tel. (805) 736-1455
