Ripe dark berries, chocolate, sweet spices, charred bark, walnuts and hints of tar on the nose. Full and intense with depth and persistence to the fruit and firm, slightly chewy tannins. Lingering and earthy finish. Drink or hold.

A rich, medium- to full-bodied red, with a fragrant thread of chopped marjoram, orange peel and spice box winding through concentrated flavors of cherry reduction, damson plum preserves, red licorice and tarry mineral. A dense, full-bodied red, with notes of cedar and pine on the nose winding through ripe crushed black cherry, plum and currant fruit. Fresh and tightly meshed, with appealing accents of red licorice, eucalyptus and graphite lingering on the firm finish. One of the headline wines of Umbria, the 2018 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni gives us an important and complex expression of one of Italy's most stubborn (and tannic) grape varieties. The workmanship behind this wine is precise and technique-based, and of course it's reliant on the best fruit produced in these manicured vineyards. The results show a full-bodied style that is given momentum by ample fruit weight and a 15.5% alcohol content. Blackberry, cherry liqueur and baking chocolate segue to sweet oak and spicey mahogany. This is a production of 15,000 bottles.

High toned and floral on the nose, this is immediately dense and grippy on the palate, with tense tannins wrapped tightly around the subtle, but promising range of wild strawberry and black raspberry fruit, black licorice, slate and rosemary flavors. But this needs cellaring, or at least a couple of hours decanting, to shine at its brightest.
