With fruit from loamy calcareous soils, the Arnaldo Caprai 2021 Colli Martani Grechetto Grecante is always a pleasure to drink. It makes me long for hot summer afternoons. Made in stainless steel only, there is a lot of tangy freshness here backed by white peach, passion fruit and crushed stone. This is a well-priced production of 140,000 bottles.

I'd definitely put this wine on a list of favorite value whites from Italy. The 2016 Colli Martani Grechetto Grecante makes your mouth happy as soon as the wine hits the palate. The bouquet is racy and zesty with crisp notes of lime, green papaya and tropical fruit. Despite the liveliness of the mouthfeel, the wine plays even stronger cards in terms of texture and fiber. Bottle production is 40,000 units strong.

The 2014 Grechetto dei Colli Martani Grecante offers spot-on aromas of lemon, peach, pear and Golden Delicious apple. This vintage is slightly weaker compared to past editions, but not by much. In the mouth, the wine offers a simple but authentic approach with crisp acidity and medium persistence. All said and done, this is a very enjoyable Umbrian white wine.

The 2012 Colli Martani Grechetto Grecante offers great value. This is a terrific white wine that bursts forward with beautiful peach, exotic fruit, melon, dried grass and mineral overtones. It’s a delicious summer sipping option. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2015. Marco Caprai is a person I have come to deeply admire over the years. He can be rough around the edges, but I suppose this trait has served him well. No matter how you slice it, he is a formidable ambassador for Umbria, Sagrantino and, of course, his brand. The 2011 Grechetto Grecante is a pretty wine that impresses for the length, minerality and focus. There is good depth and definition in the flavors, with plenty of yellow stone fruits, flowers and spices all woven together nicely. The creamy, expressive finish is graceful and inviting. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2014. Marco Caprai remains one of the leaders in Montefalco. This year, Caprai has a new wine, a single-vineyard 2007 Sagrantino that emerges from a parcel next to a pond that gives these vines a unique micro-climate.
