The 2010 Algueira Pizarra is a pure Mencia vinified in exactly the same way as the previous wines. Here, there is an ebullient, pure black cherry, cranberry and blueberry jam-scented bouquet that is once again beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy, almost Cabernet Franc-like, bell pepper fruit. It has a very fine structure, a sense of symmetry, with a finely poised finish that is long and lingering, hints of dried orange peel and white pepper on the aftertaste. This is the kind of wine you want to elope with. Drink now-2017. Adega Algueira overlooks the River Sil from its lofty perch and uses fruit from its own vineyards: Mencia, Alvarello, Merenzao, and Caino for their reds, and Godello, Loureiro, Alvarino and Treixadura for the whites. The 2007 Algueira Pizarra is 100% Mencia sourced from the estate's best vines and aged for 12 months in French oak. Aromas of wild berries, cassis, brier, and mineral lead to a still tightly wound wine that has intense flavors, a racy personality, and a lengthy, pure, vibrant finish. The dark ruby-colored Non-Vintage (so-labeled because it is a blend of 2005 and 2006) Algueira Pizarra is sourced from the estate’s oldest Mencia vineyards and aged in barrel for 12-13 months. It has a more nuanced bouquet with notes of cigar box, underbrush, graphite, black cherry, and black raspberry. On the palate it shows off an elegant style with racy, vibrant fruit, excellent balance, and a long, pure finish. It has several years of aging potential and should be at its best from 2012 to 2020.
