Tannic, structured, backward, and oaky is the 2003 Syrah Crossroads Vineyard. Even though it is a big, muscular, dense ruby/purple-colored effort, it is also more backward and closed than its sibling. Give it another year or so of bottle age and enjoy it over the following 6-8 years. Tel. (805) 239-0020

This is a very young wine. It’s strong in acids and harsh tannins, with a bitterness in the finish. It doesn’t really offer much now because it’s so closed. Yet it has a nice core of cherry and blackberry fruit, and could hang in there. Hold through 2007, and try again. ——S.H.(10/1/2006)—— 85
