The winery offered two dry table wines for tasting. The 2004 Calliope Durif (aka Petite Sirah) was aged for 18 months in old oak. It is a saturated purple color with a bouquet of licorice, espresso roast, and black fruits. Full-bodied and thick on the palate with plenty of tannin, the wine is balanced by spicy, ripe black fruit. The wine narrows in the firm finish. An infant in development, it will need 10-15 years to blossom. For patient fans of Petite Sirah, it is well worth a roll of the dice. R. L. Buller & Son was started in 1921 by the grandfather of Andrew Buller, the current winemaker. The winery remains one of the quality leaders in the production of sweet wines from the warm terroir of Rutherglen.
