This is an impressive effort that has resisted the test of time. The 1990 Rosso di Montalcino shows good color stability with a full and generous approach. The extraction feels higher here, and the wine releases aromas of cigar box, savory spice and Spanish cedar. This wine ages in large oak casks for 12 months. Back then, 100-hectoliter vessels made with Slavonian oak were used, but today the winery has moved to 50-hectoliter French oak casks instead. What really holds it together is the acidity, which still tastes bright and crisp. This is a surprising effort that has surpassed my expectations for a 27-year-old Rosso di Montalcino. The finish offers dried rose petal, cinnamon and honey.
