The 2007 Alfa Crux Malbec (100%) was sourced from a vineyard planted in 1951 and aged for 18 months in new French and American oak. It delivers a fragrant bouquet of sandalwood, cinnamon, clove, lavender, and black cherry. On the palate it is plush, round, and pleasure-bent, finishing with no hard edges. A polished red that's settled well with some bottle age, as tertiary spice and earth notes frame a mix of red and black berries, with hints of licorice and graphite filling out the long finish. Elegant crushed fruit palate, nice middle sweetness and good oak. A nice, potentially complex wine.

Not every vintage is ideal, and the ’07 version of Alfa Crux, while still very good, is not on a par with prior years. Smells brushy and roasted. The palate feels edgy and the flavors are rooty, sweet and baked, with prune-like fruit and pepper accents. Tastes rustic on the finish.——M.S.(3/1/2012)—— 89
