The 2007 Rosso di Montalcino is made from the estate’s youngest vines (under ten years) and sees 12 months in cask. The bouquet alone is magnificent. Warm, radiant fruit blossoms on the palate as this generous, textured Rosso shows off its inimitable pedigree. Sweet, open scents of red berries, flowers and spices flow through effortlessly to the long finish. Despite the wine’s richness, the classically firm style is very much in evidence. The 2007 Rosso is clearly the equal of many a Brunello, and I would be tempted to hold a few bottles to see how they age. This is highly recommended and a great introduction to the wines of Bioni-Santi. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2027. A visit to Il Greppo is always fascinating, as the estate is literally packed with history at every corner. The old casks, some of which date to the late 1800s, the collection of rare bottles and the impeccably clean, traditionally outfitted cellar are all worth a look. I was impressed with the wines I tasted from Biondi-Santi this year. The 2007 Rosso and 2006 Brunello are both far more accessible than the super-austere wines that were common here not too long ago.
