The 2004 Sauvignon Blanc Giess was harvested toward the end of October at a very moderate 13% potential alcohol, but took its time fermenting and was still youthfully yeasty when I tasted. Aromas of coriander and peppermint, grapefruit and banana, are followed by a palate impression that is firm and chalky, still overtly yeasty, and informed by grapefruit, banana, honey, nut oils, mint and sage. A satisfyingly soothing finish is true to the same themes, a touch of sweetness balanced by fresh acidity. Neumayer, located in the little known Traisental south of Krems, has been one of my personal favorite sources for Austrian wine, so it is a pleasure to report that he now has an American importer.
