Neumayer’s offering labeled simply as Der Wein Vom Stein comes in large part from an old field blend (although “cliff-dwelling blend” would be a more apt term in this instance) that incorporates a goodly percentage of Traminer. To this base, he adds bits of this and that, notably Riesling and Muskateller. The aroma of the resulting blend features yellow plum, elder flower and apple. In the mouth, this mid-weight, creamy-textured wine is very meaty, marrowy in flavor, with plum, apple and brown spice elements. Springs of playful, bright, ripe acids keep the flavors animated, and the surprisingly delicately-flavored finish is dry and whistle-clean. Neumayer, located in the little known Traisental south of Krems, has been one of my personal favorite sources for Austrian wine, so it is a pleasure to report that he now has an American importer.
