Readers should check out the 1996 Cabernet Franc St. Jean Estate. Only 300 cases were produced of this 90% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 5% Malbec blend. It reveals explosive aromas of violets, blueberries, leather, and black fruits. Dense and rich, with great finesse and complexity, this wine, aged in 100% new French oak, reveals gorgeous flavor concentration and authority, but no heaviness or thickness. An ethereal effort, it is a breakthrough Cabernet Franc for Chateau St. Jean. It will drink well young and evolve nicely for 10-12 years.
