The 2010 Morellino di Scansano Vaio is a fragrant wine with smoky tones of cigar box and blackberry preserves. It’s not the most typical Morellino available: Instead, it offers loads of ripe fruit on the soft close. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2015.
Engineer Pierluigi Tagliabue bought a vacation home in Montalcino years ago and fell in love with the Tuscan wine lifestyle. He started by first producing Brunello and later extended his vinous ambitious to Maremma. That’s the cliff note version of Mr. Tagliabue’s personal tale. The full-length version, however, includes a long chapter in which his daughter was married to a reigning prince of Italian enology. Her former husband is Jacopo Biondi Santi (son of the late Franco Biondi Santi) who, coincidentally, also owns two of the most celebrated properties in Montalcino and Scansano respectively.
