The 2006 Barrouge (80% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot) offers up notes of smoked herbs, damp earth, tar, sweet cherries, and plums. Medium-bodied and elegant with some of the vintage’s tell-tale tannins, it offers good flesh as well as an alluring appeal. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. I rarely see these wines, but they have been around since the mid-nineties. Barlow’s 50 acres are situated between the towns of Calistoga and St. Helena, and fewer than 2,000 cases are produced each year.Tel. (707) 942-8742
