The 2004 Seleccion Especial is a blend of 75% Tempranillo, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Merlot aged for 18 months in French and American oak. Dark cherry red in color, it exhibits aromas of wood smoke, clove, violets black currant, and blackberry. This leads to a medium to full-bodied wine with ample spicy fruit, light tannin, good balance, and a pure finish. At 70% Tempranillo and only 25% Cabernet and Merlot, there’s a detectable green core running through the nose and palate. Surrounding that is sizable fruit and oak, the latter of which adds dill to the fray.
