The 2003 Semillon has a very well defined, quite Loire-like bouquet with hints of licorice and dried honey. The palate is well balanced with a waxy entry. There are touches of beeswax, dried honey, dried mango mixed with a little spice. This segues towards a harmonious, walnut-tinged finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. It could actually benefit from another 2-3 years in bottle and should age well. Drink 2012-2020. Franschhoek’s Boekenhoutskloof is rightly regarded as one of South Africa’s leading wineries, the only producer I awarded 5-stars in the 7th Wine Buyers Guide (though I would now add more.) The ever-enterprising Mark Kent has recently acquired a vineyard in Swartland that he intends to use for his Syrah.
