The 2001 has begun to fade and is now austere, lean and short, as if its baby fat has completely faded away. This medium-bodied wine’s dark plum color is followed by notes of fig, plum, black cherry and underbrush. The acidity and tannins are beginning to poke through, and the fruit seems to have dissipated much faster than I would have expected. The wine is certainly very good, but is a much more narrow wine that coming after the blockbuster, world-class 2002, suffered in comparison.
