The outstanding, saturated dark ruby-colored 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon is reminiscent of a St. Julien from a great, ripe vintage. Sweet black currant, spices, and blackberries can be discerned in its effusive aromas. This medium to full-bodied wine has gorgeous depth of fruit, an elegant, almost feminine personality, and a long pure finish. Cassis, other assorted black fruits, blueberries, and cherries are found throughout its silky-textured core. Projected maturity: 2003-2013. Readers who have not yet discovered the wines of Boekenhoutskloof (Boekenhout is the Afrikaans word for beech tree) should certainly do so as this winery has consistently wowed me with their offerings. As I reported in Issue #134, winemaker Mark Kent has the magic touch, he admirably marries the qualities of the Old World with those of the New. The only problem is that quantities are tight (doesn't that always seem to be the case with the good ones?).
