The 2011 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo definitely shows the heat of the vintage with thicker aromas of blackberry preserves, barbecue spice, teriyaki sauce, liquid smoke and grilled rosemary twig. There's a sweet element to the bouquet that underscores the summer heat of 2011. That natural sweetness carries over to the palate where, not surprisingly, the tannins feel lush and soft. The mouthfeel is opulent and round with loads of blackberry and blackcurrant on the long finish. This edition of Titolo will certainly prove cellar worthy, but I can't imagine it lasting as long as some of the wines made in cooler years.

Aromatic and herbal, this finely knit version layers rich flavors of ripe black currant puree, seared beef, mesquite smoke and melted licorice in a finely sculpted package, with a long, minerally finish. Medium red-ruby. Perfumed, wild aromas of raspberry, dark cherry, iron and dried flowers on the knockout nose. Then silky, pliant and compellingly rich, with superb density to the flavors of red fruits, sweet spices and fresh aromatic herbs. Finishes very long and pure, with considerable power. This may well merit an even higher score with aging but it will need a good five to seven years of patience. Titolo has been the best Aglianico del Vulture for many years now and is really one of Italy's better red wines.
