A vineyard selection fermented in 600-liter open barrels aged for 22 months in French oak of which 40% is new, the impressive 2009 Eenzaamheid Shiraz (Afrikaan for “solitude”) has a juicy, ebullient bouquet of red currant, raspberry, violet and a dash of white pepper. The palate is full-bodied and though not a complex Shiraz, it is well balanced and pure with crisp, vibrant peppery Shiraz fruit on the long finish. Drink 2012-2017. Based in Paarl, Fairview is one of South Africa’s historic names, synonymous with the Back family who bought the estate in 1937. They produce a range of well-priced, mainly Rhone inspired wines under the watchful eye of winemaker Anthony de Jager. Lush and exotic, with layers of crushed plum, boysenberry preserves and roasted fig fruit all rolling together, backed by lively anise and pain d'épices notes.
