Classic Weinert wine; meaning it’s well-aged, mature and sort of throwback. It’s not purple and saturated and sticky; instead it’s medium-weight and a touch scratchy, with roasted berry aromas followed by dry cherry, raspberry and plum flavors. The ruby-colored 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals hints of amber on the edge of the glass. Aromatically, it offers sweet black raspberries and blackberries. On the palate, this old-style Cabernet has loads of personality in its baked, dark fruit flavors. The 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon is an extroverted, tar, chocolate, and jammy blackcurrant-scented wine with attractive, plump flavors. Fleshy and medium to full-bodied, with plenty of guts, an admirable mid-palate, sweet fruit, and a chewy texture, it can be drunk over the next 4-6 years. Overall, Bodega Weinert remains the number one source of complex, concentrated, aromatic, intense, traditionally-styled South American wines, but Concha y Toro (Chile) and Catena (Argentina), whose wines are made in a more modern day style, offer strong competition. The wines are generally not released until the winery feels they are close to their plateau of maturity, thus offering the consumer ready to drink wines. The top wines are the Cavas de Weinert and Malbec, made from very old vines. It is rare to see a Malbec from Bodega Weinert, and when one is released it tends to be expensive.
