The 2021 The Empress Riesling features fruit from the Eden Valley and is an austere, mineral expression of the region. In the mouth is crushed rocks, apple skin, lemon zest and white tea tannins. In the context of the other Eden Valley Rieslings on the bench here, the acidity is really punched down into the fruit—it's on the plush end of the spectrum, although that can be hard to believe when looking at the wine in isolation. A great vintage.

The 2014 The Empress Riesling is scented of lime juice, grapefruit peel, honeysuckle and peach blossoms with a hint of coriander seed. Light-bodied, dry and with a frisky line of acidity, it delivers a good intensity of perfumed citrus flavors and long, zesty finish.

The 2012 The Empress Riesling is showing signs of slow evolution on the nose, with waxy lemons, lime tart, lanolin and honeycomb notes mingling with just a hint of petrol. Dry, light-bodied and offering plenty of vibrant, well-expressed savory and citrus flavors in the mouth, it finishes long with an uplifting burst of freshness.
