The 2007 Honoris – named in honor of recently deceased Erich Solmon, who had reactivated the notion of blending Riesling and Traminer – combines 20% of the latter variety with late-harvested Riesling from the portion of Pfaffenberg Salomon farms for the Metternichs. Seven grams of residual sugar are scarcely noticeable as sweetness but are efficacious in both their support of lychee, lime, pear, and hazelnut flavors, and in the corresponding reduction in alcohol that helps this creamily-textured wine waft over the palate and finish with lift and refreshment. The blend of Riesling with members of the Traminer family was once widespread in German-speaking wine regions, and if these grapes’ complimentary characteristics are not evident on the face of it, the synergies on display in a glass of Honoris offer a delicious demonstration.
