This is a dry Syrah to drink now with upscale fare. It feels classy and important, although it’s not a blockbuster. Prefers elegance over power, with firm tannins and acidity framing sour cherry candy, mineral and white pepper flavors. Drink now. ——S.H.(2/1/2011)—— 90

The 2006 Syrah Alisos Canyon reveals a soft style along with a solidly constructed, deep personality. Notions of bacon fat, damp earth, roasted herbs, licorice, red cherries, and black currants emerge from this very good Syrah. Consume it over the next 3-5 years. One of my favorite Central Coast wineries appears to have struggled with ripeness in the challenging 2006 vintage. However, at the same time, Qupe has also produced some impressive cuvees. A dark ruby/purple color and attractive aromas of underbrush, black fruits, smoke, black cherries, currants, and a hint of plums emerge from the 2003 Syrah Alisos Vineyard. It reveals a certain tar-like character in the mouth. This medium to full-bodied, well-made effort is an excellent example of Syrah. Tel. (805) 688-2477

Revealing a saturated color, the 2002 Syrah Alisos Vineyard exhibits primordial forest floor-like notes along with notions of fresh mushrooms, dense black currants, chocolate, and salty sea breezes. Spicy, with loads of character, medium to full body, and a long finish, it requires another year of bottle age, and can be enjoyed over the following decade. Tel. (805) 688-2477
