The Polvanera 2015 Gioia del Colle Primitivo 16 sees fruit from a vineyard with loose, rocky calcareous soils and plants that are 70 years old. They are trained in the traditional alberello system that naturally reduces yields and increases concentration and richness. This wine is perfumed and linear with dusty cherry notes followed by dried violets and roses. The mouthfeel delivers big power with a 16% alcohol content and plenty of Southern Italian heat on the close. It's ripe for a pasta alla crudaiola, with fresh cherry tomatoes, basil and heaping spoonfuls of aged, grated ricotta. Some 25,000 bottles were released.

Polvanera's 2010 Gioia del Colle Primitivo 16 is a thick and penetrating wine that shows an uncharacteristic note of sourness that is uncommon in the Primitivo grape. The wine's bouquet delivers aromas of charred earth, toasted almond and sweet cherry fruit. Its consistency is lean and moderate in length. Primitive grapes are farmed with organic methods in limestone and iron-rich soils.
