The 2010 Cometa (Fiano) wraps around the palate with juicy peaches, apricots, flowers and spices. The lush Planeta style is very much in evidence, yet there is plenty of balance. The 2009 Cometa (Fiano) is a rich, textured white laced with passion fruit, pineapple and mango. It possesses excellent persistence and enough minerality on the finish to balance the overtly tropical fruit. With time in the glass the wine becomes more subdued without losing its attractive, generous personality.

The 2008 Cometa (Fiano) opens with an exotic bouquet of honey, tropical fruit and white truffles. This is a decidedly rich, textured white, yet all of the elements come together beautifully in the glass. Hints of passion fruit and pineapple linger on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2013. This is a solid set of wines from Planeta, one of Sicily's better-known estates. As good as the best of these wines can be, they are also very safe. It would be nice to see Planeta take some more chances and make wines with a little more ambition. The raw materials certainly seem to be present to make that happen. The 2007 Cometa (Fiano) is a richer, sweeter wine loaded with candied orange peel and passion fruit. The wine’s textured, expansive personality makes it suitable for similarly rich dishes, and the notes of sweetness should pair nicely with spicier foods. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2011. This is one of the better sets of wines I can remember tasting from Planeta. The estate seems to have dialed back the use of oak, and at their finest, the wines offer lovely balance. The 2006 Cometa (Fiano) is a big, full-bodied wine loaded with tropical, honeyed fruit, roasted nuts, minerals, and sweet toasted oak.
