The 2013 Sicilia Cometa is the first in a mini series of excellent vintages to come. This wine is more firm and streamlined than 2014, but also riper and more fragrant than 2015. This expression shows a deep sense of varietal purity with aromas of white peach, poached pear, pine nut and dried herb. Those delicate herbal characteristics with dry hay and garden herb become more prominent as the wine evolves and develops in the bottle. Fruit comes mostly from the Gurra vineyard (in the Menfi area of Southwest Sicily) with limestone and chalk soils. This wine delivers bright acidity, but it also shows ripe and opulent fruit that you can expect from this warm vintage. The Fiano grape benefits from the kind of heat and water stress seen in 2013.

The 2012 Sicilia Cometa is the result of a cooler vintage. This is also the first vintage made part of the new Sicilia DOC appellation (before 2012, the wine was labeled Sicilia IGT). The mouthfeel is slightly thinner compared to the warm 2013 vintage and it is definitely crisper. This wine offers a clean vein of acidity at the back. Its compact mouthfeel is compensated by sharp and brilliant aromas displayed on the bouquet. Citrusy notes of grapefruit and lemon blossom are followed by tropical fruit and garden greens. You get oregano, laurel leaf and a fragrant touch of basil. As those cool climate aromas taper off, the wine begins to show very elegant tones of honey and crushed mineral.

This is the last vintage classified as Sicilia IGT. The 2011 Cometa is a wine of evident finesse and grace. It is an understated expression of Sicilian Fiano, yet it does an excellent job of transmitting its territorial and varietal purity. This wine is more complete and nuanced next to the more mono-thematic 2010 vintage that precedes it. Fresh fruit nuances recall exotic notes with papaya, spice and saffron. Brimstone and crushed granite give the wine delineation and contouring.

The 2010 Cometa reveals an exceedingly soft texture and many creamy components that give the wine importance in terms of mouthfeel and density. Yet, this Sicilian Fiano offers enough balanced acidity to add a deep sense of lift and buoyancy to the palate. In terms of bouquet, you will enjoy a long succession of ripe fruit characteristics with pineapple, candied fruit, camomile and saffron. Dusty mineral elements appear as distant afterthoughts on the firm and silky finish. This vintage is bold and opulent.
