Syrah master Novy has given us a beautiful Syrah to drink now with rich lamb, beef and pork dishes, or perhaps a Latin-inspired black bean soup. It’s rich, softly lush and dry, and the blackberry, currant, mocha and sandalwood flavors have exciting edges of salty cured meats and freshly crushed black pepper. This dramatic and stunningly rich Syrah shows depth, power and ripely smooth, finely ground tannins that make it drinkable now. You’ll want to stash this fresh, young Syrah away for a couple years. It’s pretty tannic now, locking down the palate. But what fruit! Enormous in blackberries, currants and cola, with an undertow of bitter chocolate, pepper and black olive tapenade. Give it until 2009, if you can. — (3/1/2008) —92

This AVA is best known for Pinots that can be Syrah-like in weight. Here’s a real Syrah, and it’s outstanding. Dark and dense, but fresh in acids, with ripely sweet tannins, it shows an intense peppery note accompanied by flamboyant blackberry and coffee flavors. Finishes dry and smooth.——S.H.(3/1/2005)—— 92
