The 2019 Fifth Wave Grenache is ripe, juicy and plush. The luxurious fruit has a warm lilt through the finish, thanks to a ripe picking decision, but loads of pink peppercorn spice to keep things morish.

The complex, earthy 2018 Fifth Wave Grenache has replaced the red-berry flavors this bottling showed in 2014–2016 with deeper, darker fruit notes—instead of raspberries and strawberries, it's more blackberries and black cherries. But there's still an attractive flurry of dried spices and remarkable litheness and agility for such a full-bodied wine. The tannins are ripe and silky, almost diaphanous, yet sufficient (when combined with the wine's acidity) to give the wine shape and length on the finish.

Showing more of the variety's wild, herbal side, the 2017 Fifth Wave Grenache reveals hints of rosemary, fennel and sage on the nose, backed by plenty of red-berried fruit. Full and round on the palate, it's silky and spicy rather than rich or heavy, with a long, refreshing finish. This vineyard, under this winemaking regime, seems able to reflect vintage variation without any substantive change in overall quality.

Langmeil's 2016 Fifth Wave Grenache is a perfect example of why this grape variety has developed such a following in South Australia (and around the world). It's open, friendly and engaging, with hints of Mediterranean herbs, cola-like spice notes and oodles of raspberry fruit. Full-bodied and supple, it finishes mouthwatering and long. It's a joy to drink.
