Zinfandel is not usually a wine you have to age, but this one does need four years or so in the cellar. It’s bone dry and quite good, with classic wild berry, tobacco, grilled meat and spice flavors, but it’s pretty tannic. Has the depth and balance to blossom by, say, 2015. ——S.H.(12/31/2011)—— 90

Greenwood Ridge does a terrific job with Scherrer’s Alexander Valley Zin grapes, capturing the intensity of these century vines while maintaining balance. The flavors are powerful, of wild summer red, blue and black berries, crushed pepper, Asian spices, creme de cassis, licorice and cola. This deep ruby/purple-colored wine offers sweet scents of jammy fruit and spices, excellent richness, and a plush, voluptuous texture that nearly conceals a moderate tannin level. Large-scaled and robust yet well-balanced, it should be drunk over the next 7-8 years. Tel. (707) 877-3262
