This estate continues to be one of the few California wineries offering a straightforward Sangiovese. The 2004, from Pope Valley, exhibits notes of strawberries, cherries, saddle leather, and herbs in its medium-bodied, crisp, fresh personality. It should be consumed over the next 1-3 years. The 1997 Sangiovese is the richest effort I have yet tasted from Flora Springs (their first vintage of Sangiovese was 1992). Although the 1997 reveals dry tannin in the finish, it represents the essence of strawberry and framboise-like fruit. This exuberant, youthful, lovely wine is meant to be drunk in its medium-bodied, vigorous youth. Flora Springs' Sangioveses are good examples of this varietal. They are wines made to be drunk in their first 4-5 years of life. The finest Sangiovese I have yet tasted from Flora Springs is the 1994.
