Two very complementary grapes, Nero d'Avola and Syrah, are blended to make the 2014 Baglio Sorìa Santagostino. This vintage shows a level of balance that I did not find in the previous edition (that felt too weighted down by oak in my opinion). In fact, this wine opens a much wider window onto aromas of black cherry, plum, spice, tar and leather. I get a good sense of the Syrah, thanks to the richly textured nature of the mouthfeel with the dark berry flavors of the Sicilian grape. This vintage of Baglio Sorìa Santagostino puts this wine enthusiastically back in play.

The 2012 Baglio Sorìa Santagostino is a blend of Nero d'Avola and Syrah from the Trapani area of southwest Sicily. This is a modern and plump expression that awards lots of space to the generous Syrah grape. The bouquet shows dark berry fruit with spice, leather and cured meat. The tannins are well integrated and relatively smooth.

The 2011 Santagostino Baglio Soria is a bold blend of Nero d’Avola and Syrah in equal parts that doles out a long line of resin, tar, smoke, spice, dark chocolate, cola and syrupy espresso. The wine spends eight months in oak and is one of the less-oaked wines in the Firriato line. Nero d’Avola and Syrah is a combination that always works well. This expression is almost over the top in terms of its overall opulence, but it certainly delivers impressive complexity and length at a very attractive price. Drink 2014-2019. Firriato has always marched to its own drum. They are part of the first wave of bigger companies to invest on Etna, and they are the first to make wine on the arid island of Favignana off the Trapani coastline.
