For twenty years, this beautifully designed winery perched on a mesa in the Santa Ynez valley north of Los Olivos has been producing wines with mixed results. Recent vintages suggest that the quality of the Chardonnays and Cabernets is moving upward. The real surprises were the three red wines. More serious, and unquestionably the best Cabernet Sauvignon Firestone has yet produced is the 1990 Cabernet Sauvignon-Reserve. It offers all the suppleness of the 1990 regular bottling, as well as more generous quantities of cassis, vanillin, and spice in the bouquet. The wine has excellent depth, a chewy, layered texture, and a long, rich, well-balanced finish. The moderate tannins are nearly submerged beneath the considerable extraction of fruit. This Cabernet can be drunk now or cellared for a decade or more. Tel. (805) 688-3940
