Pointed aromas of dark cherry, bitter licorice root, kirsch, tapenade and dried tobacco. There is something gritty and coal face about this. Yet the grape tannins, tightly wrought and detailed, sublimate the clench of oak at the finale, offering consummate poise while auguring well for a long future. Classy Taurasi. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

The 2018 Taurasi is velvety and darkly saturated with an extracted taste profile that puts black plum, blackberry preserves and tarry flavors front and center. The wine presents a veritable wall of those black fruit aromas, but it also softens with time, thanks to budding tertiary tones of spice, cured leather and earth. The leather aroma lingers longest, thanks to 18 months in oak. Some 100,000 bottles were released.

From a hot and dry vintage, the Feudi di San Gregorio 2017 Taurasi sources its fruit from a site with volcanic soils at a breezy 450 to 550 meters in elevation. As expected, the quality of fruit is slightly darker and baked with dried blackberry, plum and scorched earth. This full-bodied red offers volume and tight structure.

This fresh red features crushed cherry and pomegranate fruit, along with a savory streak of tangy iron, tobacco, smoke and spice. Medium- to full-bodied and balanced, with light, taut tannins snapping on the finish. From a classic vintage, the Feudi di San Gregorio 2016 Taurasi is a beautifully concentrated and shapely wine that is soft and generous in the right places but structured and firm in others. The wine offers a deeply layered bouquet with black cherry, plum and dried cassis. You will also encounter tarry smoke and campfire ash. This is a polished and nicely assembled expression of the mighty Aglianico grape. Production is about 60,000 bottles each vintage made.
