    The Feiler's 2006 Ruster Ausbruch Chardonnay Essenz saturates the palate with honey and apple jelly which are shot through with quickening citricity and tinged with salt, caramel, and brown spices. This succulent, creamy concentrate with its mere 6.5% alcohol lifts and soars in a finish of sorbet-like refreshment and ethereally honeyed high tones. Somehow, 382 grams of residual sugar are simply irrelevant to the taste. (And, yes, this has high acidity, but not significantly more than the corresponding Pinot Cuvee, with its pronounced sweetness and 120 fewer grams of sugar!) Like most of the best wines in this genre, there is no reason to resist drinking this now. By the same token - and taking into consideration a gradual dominance of caramel - one could follow it for up to two decades.     The 2006 Ruster Ausbruch Essenz is a classic blend for Feiler-Artinger and Burgenland of Welschriesling and Chardonnay. At only 5.5% alcohol and 429 grams residual sugar, it is one of those elixirs that literally (and legally) stretch the definition of -wine.- Candied pineapple in apple syrup, honey, and butterscotch inform a slick, oily, viscous palate. Suggestions of citrus emerge but remain rather unengaged with a slow-flowing, overridingly sweet, strikingly pure and smooth essence of honeyed and caramelized fruit. Scents of white raisin rise from the empty glass. This is a wine to re-visit in a decade, and then perhaps again in two.Feiler-Artinger's dry whites have generally not especially impressed me, but that is changing.Importer: Winemonger, Los Angeles, CA; www.winemonger.com

    The Feiler’s 2005 Ruster Ausbruch Essenz – also from Chardonnay and Welschriesling – smells of honey, candied grapefruit rind, spiced apple jelly, and caramel. For all of its richness and sweetness, this keeps a beautiful fresh lemon and grapefruit citrus core, remaining lively and calling forth the next self-indulgent sip. A refined, glycerin-rich texture, deep, complex spice, and a nut-brittle sweetness all add to the allure of this sumptuous Ausbruch. It would be no crime to drink this now, although at least two decades of enjoyment can be assumed. I have had a chance to taste only a very few samples from Feiler-Artinger over the past eighteen months, and shall try to catch up with them in the near future. Incidentally, they are switching from cork to screw caps even for the nobly sweet wines that are their greatest claim to fame.Importer: Winemonger, Los Angeles, CA; www.winemonger.com
