The 2011 Boggina sees fruit sourced from the same single-vineyard, only this expression sees 12 days of maceration and 14 moths of barrel aging (both tonneaux and botte). This is a radically different wine that shows precision and dark focus. The BogginAnfora feels fuzzy and foggy in comparison with a broader aromatic presentation, although both wines offer considerable charm. Here, the aromas are delivered straight to your senses with power and determination. The mouthfeel is richly layered with sweet cherry and spice. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028. Luca Sanjust has embarked on a whole slew of new projects at his beautiful estate located in the southeast part of Chianti, near the Chianti Classico boarder. His first priority is returning to a cru-specific philosophy. He sees his top wine, for example, less as an expression of Merlot than an expression of the Galatrona single-vineyard. The 2009 Boggina bursts from the glass with an exciting array of sweet red berries, rosemary, flowers, licorice and mint. The aromas and flavors are decidedly floral and high toned in this sexy, fruit-driven Sangiovese. I can’t say there is a lot of varietal typicity here, but this racy, sleek wine is undeniably beautiful on its own terms. The 2007 Boggina is Sangiovese from a small, old-vine parcel that Sanjust decided to bottle separately for the first time in this vintage. It is a pretty, perfumed wine, with attractive red fruit and silky tannins but the complexity, balance and personality of the estate’s finest wines seems missing. Today, the 2007 Boggina appears to be a fairly approachable, straightforward wine. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2019. Proprietor Luca Sanjust and his team make some of the most sensual, pleasurable wines in Tuscany. Always intellectually curious, Sanjust continues to push the envelope, most recently with his 2001 sweet wine, essentially a Vin Santo that can’t be labeled as such since its residual sugar is far above the legally accepted limits. This year proprietor Luca Sanjust has a new wine, which is essentially his finest barrel of Sangiovese fruit from the old-vine Boggina vineyard that supplies much of the Sangiovese that goes into the entry-level Torrione. The 2006 Boggina (100% Sangiovese) is sweet and layered in its expression of super-ripe red fruits, spices, flowers and sweet toasted oak, all of which come together with notable style. The wine possesses terrific overall harmony, with a long, vibrant finish. Today the Boggina comes across as quite youthful, but it should develop into a gem once the tannins soften a little. Sadly there are a mere 250 bottles of this wine, but the 2006 has convinced Sanjust to slightly increase production. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026. Proprietor Luca Sanjust and his team craft some of the most beautiful wines in Tuscany at the equally picturesque Petrolo estate. From top to bottom, this is a highly successful set of new releases. Readers who have an opportunity to visit the property should not leave without a few bottles of the estate’s delicious olive oil, which is just as outstanding as the wines.
